Gary Topping graduated from Northwest Nazarene College (B.A.), Northern Arizona University (M.A.), and University of Utah (Ph.D). He worked as a preservation researcher and curator of manuscripts at the Utah State Historical Society. In 1991 he became an associate professor of history at the Salt Lake Community College.
